Transportation of explosives
One of the kinds of cargoes requiring careful transportation with observance of all safety standards and regulations are explosive substances and articles able to easily ignite and to cause explosions of different power in emergency situations. Their transportation requires especially thorough preparation and experience that’s why this job is usually given to highly qualified drivers. However before taking the necessary safety precautions it is important to define to what type of substances by the degree of transportation danger one or another cargo belongs. All over the world the standard classification of cargoes, which has six different subclasses, is accepted.
Class 1.
Here belong articles and substances able to explode when breaking the transportation conditions including changes of the temperature condition, contacts with liquid, air or fire. Such cargoes can easily ignite and be a reason of mass explosions.
Class 2.
Includes cargoes that don’t cause mass explosions, but still may be seriously dangerous under the certain conditions.
Class 3.
Here belong transported articles and substances that don’t explode, but very easily ignite.
Class 4.
Is characterized by low explosive-hazard and inflammability, but in emergency situations transported articles may cause a danger for the people’s lives.
Class 5.
Cargoes that are practically insensitive to external exposure and only under exceptional conditions able to present a danger during transportation.
Class 6.
Here belong articles and substances that are not explosive and don’t present danger for the environment during transportation regardless of the conditions.
Having defined to what of the subclasses the transported cargo belongs, it is necessary to take respective safety precautions during its transportation. If substances or articles belong to the category of explosive cargoes it is necessary to find out conditions under which they may present a danger for the environment. Particularly, some of the transported cargoes may explode by strong blows, for the others a catalyst is a fire, a temperature change and so on.
All the cargoes able to explode under different conditions must be guarded during transportation so that it would be possible to promptly localize the source of a danger when emergency situations, to which belong accidents, breaking of the transportation conditions and attempts to capture the contents of a vehicle, occur. Furthermore, explosive cargoes can be transported only by specially equipped vehicles that have respective admission and are furnished with security facilities, as which may serve veneer sheets saturated with fire-resistant and waterproof solutions, rubber upholstery of the body floor and so on.
Explosive substances are transported in special containers, boxes, vessels that have increased durability and are supplied with respective labeling. It should be also remembered that during transportation of such cargoes the vehicles are forbidden to approach open fire sources closer than 300 meters.
